Nigeria-United States Relations

Nigeria and the United States share a robust and growing relationship that reflects a deepening partnership in trade, investment, and strategic collaboration. For the United States to realize and deepen its economic ties with West Africa and the larger Africa, Nigeria remains its most strategic partner and gate way.

The two countries can develop and advance economic and development goals that are beneficial to both countries and the African continent for obvious reasons.  The bilateral trade between the two countries is valued at over $10 billion annually, with the U.S. being one of Nigeria’s largest trading partners. The trade includes significant exports of Nigerian oil and gas products to the U.S., as well as imports of U.S. goods and services. The deepening economic ties between Nigeria and the U.S. underscore the potential for further collaboration and investment.

The ongoing dialogue between the two countries aims to enhance trade relations, explore new investment opportunities, and address challenges that may arise in the bilateral relationship.

Key Aspects of Nigeria-USA Economic Ties:

1. Trade: The U.S. remains a leading destination for Nigerian oil exports, which account for a substantial portion of Nigeria’s trade with the U.S. In recent years, there has been a growing diversification of trade, with increased exports of agricultural products, solid minerals, and manufactured goods from Nigeria to the U.S.
2. Investment: U.S. companies have been significant investors in Nigeria, particularly in sectors such as oil and gas, telecommunications, and manufacturing. Major U.S. companies, including ExxonMobil, Chevron, and General Electric, have substantial operations in Nigeria, contributing to job creation and economic development. Nigeria strives to build a genuinely attractive business environment for foreign companies, and the potential for any American investor to succeed in Nigeria is very huge.

Development Assistance: The U.S. provides substantial development assistance to Nigeria through various programs aimed at enhancing economic growth, improving healthcare, and promoting good governance. Initiatives such as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) programs focus on supporting Nigeria’s development goals and strengthening economic ties.

Counter-terrorism: The government has lent strong diplomatic support to the U.S. Government counter-terrorism efforts in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the U.S. The Government of Nigeria, in its official statements, has both condemned the terrorist attacks as well as supported military action against the Taliban and Al Qaida. Nigeria also has played a leading role in forging an anti-terrorism consensus among states in Sub-Saharan Africa.
